Community Projects

The development is being built in conjunction with the local Hoxane community.

The land was first identified for development by Anton Lategan a young conservationist and game ranger in the area, who recognized that the site had tremendous potential as an eco tourism destination. Anton met with the leaders of the community and together they agreed on the development A primary development objective was to create jobs and revenue streams for this impoverished community. Anton realized that he needed the expertise of a major developer to convert his dreams and the communities into reality and approached the Legacy group.

The Hoxane are all Tsonga now more commonly known as Shangaan. The tracking and bush craft skills of the “Shangaan” in this area are legendary. Today many of the locals are retained in a modern tourism function as game rangers and trackers.

History of Elephant Point

Elephant Point is situated in a region renowned for its natural diversity and concentration of big game and is undoubtedly one of the best game viewing areas in the Kruger National Park . The estate takes its name from the elephant that can frequently be seen drinking and grazing on the banks of the mighty Sabie River. In addition you will see herds of buffalo, prides of lion, leopards and numerous antelope species.

Elephant Point borders the Kruger National Park and is also neighbour to the World famous and exclusive Sabi Sand Game Reserve, home of Mala Mala, Sabi Sabi, Londolozi, Singita, Ulusaba and others.

The Sabie River is known for its wonderful biodiversity and is arguably the most bio diverse and ecologically significant river for the conservation of species in the entire Kruger National Park.

The river rises in the Great Escarpment with its source being near the Long Tom pass and flows past Elephant Point across the width of the Kruger National Park into Mozambique ending in the Indian Ocean.

There is a romantic interpretation that the origin of the name "Sabie" is the anglicized version of the Zulu word "saba" which means "fear". It was said this arose as the local people feared going to this river because of the high numbers of lions, leopards and crocodiles to be found there.
